An outreach activity about jellyfish and their presence and impact in coastal areas was developed in the framework of the MED-JELLYRISK Project in Catalonia, Spain.
During the 2013 season, the activity was carried out in different coastal areas and municipalities, generally during the whole day in places like the seafront, city squares, etc., through activities for all public and beach users. The activity consisted in setting up a moveable structure, the DOME, inviting all people to participate in the project and know more about jellyfish, their habitat and their characteristics, in a dynamic and entertaining way.
The DOME is an aluminium structure of easy transport and quick set-up, of 4 metres diameter and 2.3 metres height, covering an area of 13 m2. The structure is covered with a PVC cloth decorated with marine images, which creates a very attractive shape and invites people to look inside. A 15-minute video about jellyfish was shown inside the DOME.
Moreover, an aquarium exhibition with jellyfish and polyps was shown, and the polyps were shown under a microscope that was especially installed for this purpose.
Finally, dissemination posters were installed around the whole exhibition, informing about the Project and jellyfish in general. Also dissemination materials, such as identification cards and guides, postcards, posters etc., were available free to the visitors.
